Take the Interamericana highway and travel west until the 137 kilometer marker at “Los Encuentros”. Turn left and follow the road to the Panajachel boat launch. It is about a 3 hour drive to the Panajachel dock. From there, it is a pleasant 30 minute boat ride to Santiago Atitlán. The ride costs approximately Q25. We recommend taking one of the many travel services that are available in Antigua or the Capitol and arrange for bus service to Panajachel. You can also call us and we will help you make arrangements. Travel via mini bus is the most comfortable option. It is reasonably priced at around $10 to $15 dollars per person. Those that are on a tighter budget or are more adventurous can opt for a chicken bus. Bus stations are typically near the central market or central park in most larger towns and cities. Public Buses (also called ¨chicken bus¨-“autobús de gallinas”) are available from Guatemala and others cities in the day. Private Microbuses. It is posible to hire a fivate microbus that can pick up you from the airport. It cost aroun $100 to Santiago. The Spanish School will coordinate if you prior require. From Quetzaltenango (Shela)Travel east on the Interamericana highway and turn at the 137 kilometer marker down to San Juan La Laguna, after you can take a boat to Santiago or you go directly to Panajachel by Los Encuentros.See the above comment for directions from Panajachel to Santiago.
